Start with a guitar that's genuinely easy to play

This matters more for adults than it gets credit for. A guitar with high action (strings sitting far from the fretboard) or a wide, chunky neck makes early practice physically uncomfortable, and discomfort is the fastest way to quit. Look for a slim neck profile, low action, and a manageable body size rather than the biggest, most "serious-looking" guitar in the shop.

Practise in short, consistent sessions

You don't need an hour a day. Fifteen focused minutes, most days of the week, builds calluses and muscle memory far more reliably than one long weekend session. This is genuinely one of the biggest advantages adults have over kids learning guitar, you can be intentional about consistency in a way that's harder to enforce with a distracted teenager.

Expect sore fingers, not failure

Fingertip soreness in the first few weeks is normal and temporary, it's your calluses forming, not a sign you're doing something wrong or that your hands "aren't built for this." It typically eases within two to three weeks of regular practice. Lighter gauge strings can make this early period more comfortable if it's a real concern.

Set a realistic first milestone

Rather than "I want to be good at guitar," aim for something concrete and close: playing one full song cleanly within your first month. Most adult beginners can get there with consistent short practice, and having a real, near-term goal keeps motivation intact far better than an open-ended one.
